Iraj Sanieeis Head of Complex Systems Analysis and Optimization Department in the Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories, Alcatel-Lucent, Murray Hill, NJ. He received the Ph.D. degree in operations research and control theory and the M.A. (Hon.) and B.A. (Hon.) degrees in mathematics, all from the University of Cambridge. His research interests are in the mathematical modeling, analysis, and optimization of communications systems, with applications to architecture, design tools, and control mechanisms for emerging networks. Prior to Bell Labs and until 1998, he was a research director in the Information Sciences Lab at Bellcore in Morristown, NJ. He is a member of IEEE, INFORMS and IFIP WG 7.3 in Computer Performance Modeling and Analysis. He is also a past member of American Mathematical Society, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and a past Chair-Elect of the Telecommunication Section of INFORMS. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Operations Research, and has served on program committees of numerous IEEE and IFORMS conferences.

Complex Systems Analysis and Optimization Departmentconsists of two main research efforts: A) Mathematics of Networks and Systems and B) Scientific Computing. Key research thrusts in the first area are on fundamentals of distributed and global optimization, stochastic and asymptotic analysis, resource allocation mechanisms, and stability and control of dynamic systems. The key thrusts in the second area are on analytical and numerical solutions of novel nonlinear PDEs (such as models for nano materials) and their simulation. In both thrust areas, the focus of applications is on the modeling of emerging optical, wireless and data networks and systems with particular emphasis on the development of new mechanisms for their design, management and control.
